What is the Valpaint E-VOLUTION system?
Valpaint E-VOLUTION is a decorative microcement system for the wettest rooms in the house. In fact, Valpaint created it specifically for bathroom walls, floors and the inside of showers. It also works well in kitchens and in any other area that sees a lot of water.
The system combines a hand trowelled microcement finish, such as Valpaint METEORE 12, with a clear two component resin. Because we apply the resin with a trowel, it stays put on vertical walls and never runs. As a result, you get a compact, continuous surface without the joints between tiles, which is exactly where dirt and mould tend to build up.
What are the 7 advantages of E-VOLUTION in a bathroom?
So why choose it over tiles? Here are the seven reasons our clients mention most.
- No grout lines. One continuous surface looks calmer. Also, with no joints, there is nothing to trap dirt or turn grey over time.
- Made for water. Valpaint designed it for bathroom walls, floors and showers, so the finish stands up to water and everyday cleaning products.
- Tough underfoot. On floors, the resin layer handles daily foot traffic with ease.
- Goes over existing tiles. In many cases, we can apply E-VOLUTION straight over sound existing tiles. That means less mess, less time and a lower bill.
- Walls and floors in one material. Because the same finish can run from floor to wall and into the shower, the whole room reads as one.
- Follows every curve. We apply microcement by hand, so it wraps arches, niches and sloping ceilings. Tiles, on the other hand, would need endless cuts.
- A wide choice of looks. Finally, you can choose anything from soft concrete to richer decorative effects, all in the Valpaint colour cards.
The project: a microcement bathroom in Bristol
This bathroom sits in a Bristol loft, right under a sloping ceiling with roof windows. The clients wanted a calm, spa like room full of soft curves. For example, the plan included an arched walk in shower with a round porthole window, a matching niche, a bath, a wall hung WC and aged brass taps.
Tiles would have fought every one of those shapes. Instead, we chose Valpaint E-VOLUTION microcement and carried one warm neutral finish across the walls and into the shower, with no joints at all. As a result, the curves look clean and crisp. Meanwhile, daylight from the roof windows moves softly over the hand trowelled texture, and the shower takes seconds to wipe down.

How do we apply the Valpaint E-VOLUTION system?
Every microcement bathroom we build in Bristol follows the same careful steps. We always work to the Valpaint technical data sheets, and the exact products depend on the surface we start from.
- Survey and preparation. First, we check that the substrate is sound, stable and dry. Then we assess any existing tiles and clean every surface thoroughly.
- Priming. Next, we apply the right Valpaint primer for the substrate, so the system bonds properly.
- Microcement coats. After that, we trowel on the microcement in thin layers, first to build a smooth base and then to create the decorative texture.
- Resin protection. Then we trowel the clear two component resin over the finish. This makes the surface compact, continuous and water resistant.
- Curing and handover. Finally, we let the system cure fully, following Valpaint guidance, before you use the shower.

Microcement or tiles for a bathroom refurbishment?
In short, microcement wins on looks, cleaning and awkward shapes, while tiles remain the familiar choice. Here is how the two compare.
| Valpaint E-VOLUTION microcement | Traditional tiles | |
|---|---|---|
| Grout lines | None, one continuous surface | Joints between every tile |
| Cleaning | Wipe clean, nothing to scrub | Grout needs regular scrubbing and sealing |
| Over existing tiles | Yes, on sound tiles | Usually a strip out or tiling over |
| Curves, arches and niches | Follows every shape by hand | Many cuts and trims |
| Look | Seamless, handmade texture | Grid of joints |

Is a microcement bathroom right for your Bristol home?
A microcement bathroom suits you if you want a clean, modern look and easy cleaning. It also suits you if you like the idea of one finish flowing between walls, floor and shower. In particular, it works brilliantly for refurbishments where the existing tiles are sound, for loft and period rooms full of awkward angles, and for walk in showers and wet rooms.

Yes. Valpaint designed E-VOLUTION for shower interiors, and the finished surface resists water and everyday cleaning products. However, we always check the substrate and the waterproofing behind it first, so the whole build up is right from day one.
Often, yes. In fact, this is one of the biggest advantages of E-VOLUTION, because it saves you a full strip out. The existing tiles need to be sound and secure, so we check them carefully at the survey.
Simply wipe it with a soft cloth and a mild, pH neutral cleaner. Since there are no grout lines, splashes come off easily and nothing needs scrubbing.
It depends on the size of the room and the surfaces we start from. We build the system up in thin coats with drying time between each, and then the resin needs time to cure. That is why we give you a clear timeline with every quote.
