What is a microcement splashback?

In short, a microcement splashback is a seamless, hand applied wall finish that replaces tiles behind a worktop. On this Bristol project, we used Valpaint E-VOLUTION, a decorative system made for surfaces exposed to water. As a result, the client got one continuous, softly textured wall with no grout lines and a colour chosen for the room.

The brief

The Brief for This Microcement Splashback in Bristol

To begin with, this refurbishment gave the client a chance to treat the kitchen wall as part of the interior design rather than an afterthought. Above all, the brief called for a bespoke splashback that felt built into the architecture of the room.

  • A clean, contemporary look in keeping with the refurbished interior
  • Subtle texture and character without dominating the room
  • A finish that works with the light colour palette
  • A practical surface for splashes and everyday use
  • No visual interruption from grout lines
  • A bespoke finish instead of a standard tile

The result

The Finished Microcement Splashback

Today, the wall has a light, softly textured surface with gentle variation across it. Because everything is applied by hand, the texture has a movement that a factory made surface rarely achieves.

After all, a decorative microcement finish does not have to look flat or industrial. Here, for example, the texture gives the wall depth and lets the light from the under cabinet strip move gently across the surface.

Meanwhile, the light colour keeps the kitchen feeling open, which suits the pared back style of many Bristol refurbishments. In addition, it sits quietly beside the cabinetry and worktop. Since there are no grout lines, the wall also reads as one continuous surface.

Easy to wipe downThird, a continuous surface is simple to clean. In addition, we advise on suitable products at handover.

Why We Used Valpaint E-VOLUTION

For this microcement splashback in Bristol, we chose Valpaint E-VOLUTION. It is a decorative waterproof system formulated for walls and floors in bathrooms and shower interiors. Equally, it can be used in other areas exposed to water, including kitchens.

Furthermore, the system includes a transparent two component resin, applied vertically with a spatula. Consequently, it gives a compact, continuous and water resistant surface without grout lines. FAQ

Microcement Splashback FAQs

What is a microcement splashback?

A microcement splashback is a seamless decorative wall finish applied by hand over the splashback area, usually as a contemporary alternative to tiles. The surface is continuous, with no grout lines, and the colour and texture are created on site. Where the wall is exposed to water, we use a suitable waterproof system such as Valpaint E-VOLUTION.

Is microcement suitable for a kitchen splashback?

In short, it depends on the system and how it is applied. A standard decorative finish is not automatically suitable behind a worktop, which is why we use systems designed for the job. Valpaint E-VOLUTION is formulated for surfaces exposed to water, so it can be used in kitchens when it is applied to the manufacturer’s system requirements.

Is Valpaint E-VOLUTION waterproof?

Valpaint describes E-VOLUTION as a decorative system that makes surfaces highly resistant to water. In fact, it is designed for walls and floors in bathrooms and shower interiors, as well as other areas exposed to water. The transparent two component resin in the system also contributes to the water resistant finish.

Can a microcement splashback go over existing tiles?

In many cases, yes, it can. Valpaint states that E-VOLUTION can cover suitable existing tiles, provided the substrate is assessed and the preparation steps in the technical documentation are followed. As a result, you can often avoid removing tiles and disturbing the wall behind them.

Why choose a seamless splashback instead of tiles?

Above all, the reason is visual. A seamless splashback reads as one continuous surface, so it blends naturally with the surrounding plasterwork and joinery. Moreover, it is bespoke, because the colour and texture are developed for your interior rather than picked from a tile range.

Is a microcement splashback easy to clean?

Yes. A continuous surface with no grout joints is simple to wipe down, and there are no grout lines to discolour over time. Even so, like any decorative finish it benefits from sensible care, so we advise on suitable cleaning products at handover.

Can you create a microcement splashback in a different colour?

Yes. Indeed, colour selection is part of the service. We help you choose colours that work with your lighting, cabinetry and wider scheme, and we can prepare samples so you see the finish in your own space first.
